PEACH NEWS: September
Did you know that the Peach Activity Centre is at the forefront of assistive technology, proudly equipped with state-of-the-art Eye Care Technology? This innovative system enables individuals to control a computer using only their eyes, unlocking a world of possibilities for communication, learning, and entertainment. Our Eye Care Technology offers a vital tool for individuals with limited mobility, enabling them to express themselves, participate in educational activities, and connect with others in new and empowering ways.
What is Eye Care Technology?
Eye Care Technology, also known as eye tracking technology, uses specialised cameras and software to detect and interpret a person’s eye movements. This allows users to navigate on-screen content, select items, and even type simply by looking at them. It’s a truly revolutionary way to interact with computers for those who may find traditional input methods challenging.
How Does it Benefit Our Members?
At the Peach Activity Centre, our Eye Care Technology is making a profound difference in the lives of our members. For individuals with conditions such as cerebral palsy, motor neuron disease, or spinal cord injuries, who may have limited or no use of their hands, this technology provides an independent means of communication. They can now:
Communicate effectively: Express thoughts, needs, and desires by selecting words and phrases, or even typing out full sentences, all with their eyes. This drastically reduces frustration and enhances social interaction.
Engage in educational activities by participating in online learning, accessing educational games, and exploring interactive content to foster cognitive development and promote ongoing learning.
Enjoy entertainment and leisure: Browse the internet, watch videos, play games, and connect with friends and family on social media, promoting independence and enjoyment.
Develop new skills: Learn to navigate digital interfaces and build confidence in their abilities, opening doors to new interests and opportunities.
Our Commitment to Innovation
The Peach Activity Centre is committed to delivering innovative solutions that enhance the quality of life for all our members. Our investment in Eye Care Technology reflects this commitment, offering a pathway to greater independence, self-expression, and inclusion. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to fully engage with the world around them, and this technology is a powerful step in that direction.
Come and discover how this incredible technology is making a difference at the Peach Activity Centre! Our trained staff are on hand to demonstrate its capabilities and show you how it’s empowering our members every single day.
STAFF OF THE MONTH
This month, we are delighted to recognise not one, but two outstanding members of our team with the prestigious Staff of the Month Commendation. We extend our warmest congratulations to Lynald and Toyin, both of whom have demonstrated exemplary dedication and professionalism in their roles managing Live-in care packages.
Lynald and Toyin have consistently gone above and beyond, receiving exceptional feedback from both their clients and their grateful families throughout the month. Their unwavering commitment to providing compassionate and high-quality care has genuinely made a significant difference in the lives of those they support. This positive feedback is a testament to their hard work, empathy, and the invaluable trust they have built within their care relationships.
As a token of our appreciation for their exceptional contributions, both Lynald and Toyin will each receive a £30 bonus. This bonus is a small recognition of their immense efforts and serves as an encouragement to continue their outstanding work. We are incredibly proud to have such dedicated individuals as part of our team. We are confident that their continued commitment will inspire others to strive for similar levels of excellence. Congratulations once again to Lynald and Toyin!

Behaviours
From time to time, service users present behaviours that challenge, violence, or aggressive tendencies that need to be fully documented in the assessment of need and the care plan. For this particular policy, behaviours that challenge include self harm, self-eng effect, self-abuse, or harm to others. If behaviours that challenge, involve violence, or exhibit aggressive tendencies are present, a full and robust risk assessment must be undertaken to protect not only the resident but also the staff. This needs to include the use of any restraint techniques where appropriate.
WHAT OUR CLIENTS HAVE TO SAY...
Our morning routine has become significantly less stressful for my son and me since the caress started taking him to school. He now eagerly anticipates their arrival.

HELPFUL TIPS
WHEN A PERSON WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IS EXHIBITING CHALLENGING BEHAVIOUR, REMEMBER IT’S A FORM OF COMMUNICATION, NOT JUST A DIFFICULT MOMENT. TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO TELL YOU.
ABC CHARTS
This month, our focus will be on comprehending and addressing the root causes of challenging behaviours through the observation and documentation of their ABCs (Antecedent, Behaviour, Consequence). This methodology will facilitate a transition from reactive responses to effective interventions.
Breakdown of each step:
Step 1: Identify the “A” (Antecedent): The antecedent is the event immediately preceding the behaviour—the trigger. This can encompass a range of factors, from environmental influences to specific requests.
Questions to Consider:
- What circumstances were present prior to the onset of the behaviour?
- What was our location, and who was present with us?
- What was requested of the child?
- Were there any sensory stimuli, such as elevated noise levels or intense illumination?
Step 2: Note the “B” (Behaviour): The behaviour constitutes the action itself. It is imperative to describe the occurrence with objective precision.
Example:
- Rather than recording “he had a tantrum” in your care log, consider: “he descended to the floor, vocalised screams, and engaged in leg-kicking for a duration of 2 minutes.”
Step 3: Identify the “C” (Consequence): The consequence is the event immediately following the behaviour. This can often reinforce the behaviour, even if inadvertently.
Questions to Consider:
- How did other individuals react?
- Did the child achieve their desired outcome (e.g., was a request withdrawn)?
- Did they receive attention from you or others?
- Were they able to evade or avoid a task?
Implementation in Practice
By systematically charting the ABCs across multiple incidents, one can discern patterns and acquire a deeper comprehension of the child’s behaviour. For instance, it may be observed that a child consistently experiences a meltdown each time a request for cleanup is made. In this scenario, the ‘A’ represents the request, the ‘B’ represents the meltdown, and the ‘C’ represents the abandonment of the demand. This indicates that the child has learned to utilise this behaviour to circumvent a task.
Our objective this month is to ascertain the underlying “WHY” behind the behaviours observed when supporting our children.
HEALTH AND WELL BEING CORNER...
A 15-minute walk outdoors can significantly impact one’s well-being.
To boost your health and wellbeing, consider taking a 15-minute daily outdoor walk. This offers fresh air and natural light, both of which are known to improve one’s mood. It also provides an opportunity to connect with loved ones, strengthening relationships that are crucial for mental well-being.
Foster Connections: Strong relationships with friends and family are essential for maintaining good mental health.
Immerse Yourself in Nature: Spending time outdoors can help reduce stress and improve your mood.
Maintain Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support optimal bodily function and cognitive performance.
Prioritise Balanced Nutrition: Strive for a balanced diet abundant in fruits and vegetables to support both physical and mental well-being.
Cultivate a Positive Mindse
Practice Mindfulness: Pay close attention to the present moment, encompassing your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.
Contribute to Others: Engaging in acts of kindness for others can enhance one’s self-esteem and sense of purpose.
